Landmark is the Russian word for “memory”. It is sometimes translated as “fossil” or “historic site” but those are imprecise translations. In Russia, there are many best places to visit. Landmarks play an extremely important role in the identity and culture of a city or town. They help bind a community together by giving it something important to which it can relate. They can also provide a sense of pride for the people who live in the area. In modern Russia, there are many “living” landmarks. These are buildings that have been given new uses after serving their original purpose.
It is one of those living landmarks. The building was originally constructed as a summer home for Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The property is open to the public as a museum but it is especially famous as the place where the last Imperial family of Russia lived. Today, the palace is operated as a museum and is open to the public on certain days during the year.
Mayakovskaya (Moscow Metro)
One of those living landmarks is the Moscow Metro station called “Mayakovskaya”. It is one of only four underground stations that remain part of the original Metro system. The others are Park Pobedy, Tagansky and Kursky. The brief doesn’t say this but, “Mayakovskaya” means “mayor’s station”. It is so named because it was the first underground station to open and was originally located under the building that later became the Moscow City Hall. When the current city hall was built, the station was moved underground.
The other living landmark mentioned in the brief is the Winter Palace. This is one of those buildings with an interesting and colourful history. Today, it is a major museum. Back in the day, it was the home of the Imperial family. After the fall of the Romanovs, it was used by several different government agencies. In 1925, it was turned over to the State Historical Museum which remains its current owner and operator.
This little known island in the Sea of Okhotsk has many “living” landmarks. These include several abandoned Cold War-era nuclear missile sites. The islands main town is Kizhi which means “creek” in Russian. There are several other villages on the island. The most important of these is Khorol which means “seagull”. Seagull is the name of the main village’s sports club. It is the home of FC Khorol which plays in the fourth tier of Russian football.
The Peterhof Palace is one of the best examples of 18th-century architecture in St. Petersburg. It was designed by Bartolomeo Cristofori who was a member of a famous Italian family of architects. This museum is part of the State Hermitage Museum which also includes the Winter Palace and the famous Blue Rose Garden. This new site was known as “Old Palace” or, more commonly, “Palace of the Botkin”. The palace at the Old Palace site remained the main residence of the Russian Tsars for more than two centuries.
The Moscow Kremlin is truly one of the wonders of the world. It was first constructed around the 11th century and has been occupied continuously by various rulers ever since. During the Soviet era, it was the centre of power for the Soviet Union. Now, it’s the home of the Russian president and the executive branch of government for the Russian Federation.
