A landmark is something that stands out above all else in a particular location. It can be a building, a statue, a hill, a church, a bridge, or anything else which serves to point up the location’s uniqueness. A city can have many landmarks and each of these can have a very special meaning to the people who live there. The most important and best landmarks in Paris are:

 Porte Saint-Martin

First, the Porte Saint-Martin is one of the three original gates which originally connected the city of Paris with the suburb of Saint-Germaine-en-Lay. (The other two gates are the Porte Saint-Denis and the Porte Saint-Martin.) This gate was built in 1667 by Charles Le Bruin and is located at the intersection of rues de la Harp and du President Wilson. It was here, at the Porte Saint-Martin, that prisoners were once led to the guillotine.

Later, it was through this arch that the victorious soldiers of Napoleon entered Paris after his 1815 victory over the allies. And so on. You get the idea. Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, what makes the Porte Saint-Martin especially significant is that in my opinion, it is the most photographed arch in all of Paris. I think this is because it is an extremely photogenic structure and there are many people who like to capture a city’s specialness on film or the LCD screen of their digital cameras.  Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower stands sentry over the city of Paris like no other manmade object. It is instantly recognizable throughout the world and therefore is one of the most important landmarks in all of Paris. In fact, if you were to ask someone on the street to point out the Eiffel Tower, I bet that person could do it with his or her finger.

Ask 100 people to point out the Empire State Building in New York City, however, and I bet that person will have a difficult time finding that particular building amongst all the other tall buildings in Manhattan. The Eiffel Tower is so special because it has become an icon of modern civilization. It has stood for over a hundred years as a proud symbol of human ingenuity and technological progress.

 Arc de Triumph

The Arc de Triumph is a magnificent triumphal arch located at the southern end of the Champs-Élysées. It is one of the best-known and most photographed monuments in the world. The arch stands sentry over the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, who died serving France during World War I.

This monument is perhaps most famous for the fact that a car driven by a drunken German officer ran into the base of the arch on November 11, 1918, killing one soldier and injuring four others. Today, tourists can still drive their vehicles into the base of the arch, but it is for an entirely different reason. You see, tourists now “drive into the arch” as a way of taking a photo of themselves with the arch as a backdrop.

 Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a landmark church located at the top of the Butte Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It is a well-known symbol of the city of Paris and can be seen from many parts of the city. It has been featured in several movies including Casablanca and the James Charles film From Russia with Love.

It has the distinction of being the first religious building to be constructed in Paris after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The basilica is one of the most visited religious sites in all of Europe and therefore is one of the most photographed buildings in Paris. Also read about: “China”
